Crackers & Cookies

Until now, I’ve kept my mouth shut about this, but it’s time that somebody said what we all know to be true, The “Fat” Police have ruined all of the commercial baker’s crackers and cookies, and I’m mad as hell about it!

The commercial bakers, in their rush to capitalize on the “low fat” and “fat free” crazes, and to appease the “Fat Police,” have left us only crumbly, albino-like, tasteless cracker and cookie products to buy. A pox on all of their houses I say, a pox!

Now, when bringing your long cherished favorites home from the grocery store, all the while taking care as to not bang, bump, drop or bruise them, you are deeply saddened to find that the damage that you had done your best to prevent had already been done for you, by the bakers, shippers and stock clerks who seem to pay little concern to the condition of the crumbly, washed out, tasteless, remnants of your (my) childhood favorites, leaving you only a spectral shadow of the goodies that you once enjoyed with reckless abandon.

Even as they were cooling on the production line, these mere “shadows” or your childhood favorites have a lessened visual appeal; their colors are not as deep as those of your (my) memory; they look “cheapened” somehow.

Yes, along with removing (or drastically reducing) the oils/fats, they made these tender morsels more subject to breakage, less visually appealing and less tasty. This is the bakery equivalent to being a history revisionist, and the whole damned thing stinks to high Heaven.

If I had the power, I’d make all of the commercial bakeries produce both the old and the new recipes/formulations for say, three months, to give US the choice; then let’s see what they decide to do on their own after they look at the sales figures. I’m betting that, although there may be a market for both, the traditional products will far and away outsell the IMO, inferior new products, at least, among those of us with taste buds and memories.

What say you?

The only way to get real taste is to bake stuff at home...that is until somebody decides to ban the ingredients.

-Sepp,

"...that is until somebody decides to ban the ingredients."

That would be the bleeding heart, "We Know What's Best For You" Police, I'm betting ;-)

Flaming Meddlers!

I agree with you and I think we as adults should be able to decide what we want when it comes to the whole issue of transfats. Despite popular belief, it does alter the taste of some products.

Lisa,

This isn't about transfats so much as it is about ALL fats and/or oils.

Remove the fats/oils, and the "products" just aren't the same.

Just look at a bag of crumbly, pale, tasteless Chips Ahoy, or Graham Crackers and you'll see what I mean.

This country and its current PC mentality is going to Hell in a hand basket, and it's taking the express route...
